Sweat lodge 1st September 2016

Where to build it ?

Maybe down by the river, or in the garden ! Near the round house sounds like a good choice.

The unheated hot tub would make a good plunge pool for after the ceremony.

We took a day or two to think about where to locate it and what suitable materials we might have lying around.
We have a pile of small poles that we rescued from a swamp a year ago and they are now dry enough to use.IMG 20160829 162905 We have a 4ft metal hoop which was once Fionn mac Coul ‘’s hula hoop. (maybe  it was an old cart wheel rim ) but we are sure it's his hula hoop.

On reflection, the river with it's magical power over us and all who visit there seems like the perfect choice.

First to cleanse the space using some sage dried from last year. This is one of the oldest methods to cleanse a space and its nice to be using our own sage. It is important to be mindfull when using the herb , keeping focused on the intended purpose .

€14 was spent on a roll of metal strap and some large screws to keep the hoop in place.
Then it's off to the river with us, after cutting an incision into each pole for the hoop to rest on.

IMG 20160830 142402Soon the first poles are in position and are secured to the hoop with the metal straps and the screws.

Then using strips of carpet to cover when all the poles are in position for insulation it's already taking shape. Next to cover the entire structure with plastic to water proof it and add to the insulation.

A wooden pallet on top of the roof space gives strength and again this is covered with plastic.

We have straw bales that are wet and heavy so they are used next as they will keep heat within the sweat lodge.

Finally plenty of mud and sods to cover the straw. This is the really fun bit
It feels like giving a really sensual massage, at one with the soft warm mud and firmly easing it
to connect with the straw.

What about having our sweat lodge on an Island, with a moate and a bridge to enter.

A few short poles donated by our curiously interested neighbour and we are in.

It was just completed when the rain arrived. After a night of heavy downpours we are anxious as we head down for our morning dip. Will it have collapsed or even be washed away. To our delight and great joy all is just as we left it and it is completely dry and warm inside. It feels like we could sleep here once the clay on the ground has time to settle.IMG 20160902 151938

The advantage of the moate means this should not take too long as the moisture will be drawn away to it.
Now we will watch as it greens over and becomes one with it's surroundings.
It is exciting now, as we adventure in search of stone to heat it for our first sweat.IMG 20160902 152010
